This venue, originally designed to commemorate the ‘radio days’ of the
‘50s and ‘60s, was transformed into the Misafir Odası, or Guest Room,
in the spring of 2006. Its furnishings in the style of turn-of-the-century
Istanbul urban homes, with Art Nouveau armchairs, couches, old-time radios,
accessories and light fixtures, a piano and the Istanbul library and newspaper
and magazine racks, attract both locals and foreigners. Each of the comfortable
seating groups is original and authentic – this spring they were refurbished
to welcome the new season. The historic Radio Bar has moved to the corner
of the room, but continues to serve as it did before, with its neon lighting
and antique liquor cabinets.
The Radio Bar has an interesting history: French artists who later became
famous made their first stage appearances here. Sylvie Cobo, better known
by her stage name “La Baronne,” is one of them. Turkish musicians also
presented live performances, and Turkey’s most exciting and prestigious
radio station, Açık Radyo, held its Annual Meeting here every year.
